The beaches of Costa Rica have always been an attraction for the surfing crowd with Tamarindo and Nosara being the most popular stops for surfers. However if you are a novice, or just want to avoid the powerful waves, then the small coastal town of Samara is the perfect place for you. Nestled between the Nicaragua and Panama, tourism is certainly growing in the country of Costa Rica and Samara is truly one of it’s hidden gems.

Easily accessible by paved road from the country’s international airport, Samara is a tiny town of roughly one thousand people. This charming beach town reminds us of the laid back living that Costa Rica is most known for. This is the perfect location for both a family trip or a couples only getaway.

With year round high temperatures ranging from 85 to 96 degrees, offers a lot more than just surfing. By taking just a short walk along the beach, you will find yourself in the fishing town of Matapalo and the shallow waters are great for snorkeling. If snorkeling and diving is your thing, the northern end of Samara is where you’ll want to be for that. The reef in that area closes up towards the beach and the waters are clear. You’ll find several schools of fish including star fish, manta rays, yellow jacks and pork fish. Windsurfing, sport fishing and kayaking round out the other water sports offered n the area.

Although the town is small, you’ll find suitable accommodations from cheap cabinas, to bed and breakfast establishments, boutique style hotels and condo rentals. I’ve found cabinas priced from the amazingly low, in season price of $50 per night. If you’d prefer a more “luxury” hotel atmosphere, the Hideaway Hotel is just a 5 minute drive from Samara and is still incredibly affordable at $100 per night. The grounds of Hideaway Hotel are absolutely gorgeous and the home of monkeys and exotic birds. The rates of the 12 suite hotel also include breakfast.

If you’re a Gen Y traveler on the go, take the time to get to know Playa Samara, if not for the surfing – then definitely for the laid back and relaxing beach living.
